Last week I was invited to @TheMomsNetwork screening of Boy Genius, which premiered earlier this year. I am 100% for any movie where I can take my kids and always on the lookout for darling indie film. This was a win-win!

The girls and I headed to Arena Cinelounge in Hollywood which is truly a unique movie going experience. I had been there once before for a premiere and fell in love with the intimate theatre and its independent nature. They offer vegan popcorn, CBD infused beverages and set a tone like none other in Los Angeles. Seating is limited but you can be guaranteed that the audience is filled with bona fide cinefiles. Loacker provided some tasty wafer cookies with Hazelnut being Olivia’s favorite! They even gave her a bag of Vanilla for the ride home.  I’m waiting to see if they come out with a dairy free or allergan friendly recipe soon!

Boy Genius is the second feature length film from director Bridget Stokes and follows 12-year old child prodigy Emmett (Miles Brown) through the peaks and pitfalls of the high school experience. The film is often hilarious as we are swept through Emmett’s imagination and his interpretation of reality. SAT Prep instructor Mary (Rita Wilson) plays an integral role that is sometimes nurturing, often challenging and provides some stability to Emmett. She is a self described “onion, wrapped in a layer cake, wrapped in a Terrence Malik film.” As Emmett’s scholastic achievements soar, his home life begins to unravel and the film takes a turn to the dramatic side as he faces familial challenges with the help of the school principal, played by Nora Dunn.

While Boy Genius provides an oddball look at high school life, it also skims the surface on deeper issues like racism, the challenges of single parenting and the misunderstandings that life throws at you. It’s definitely a family oriented film that can be enjoyed with older kids. Parents will appreciate the humor, childless millennials will understand the experience and my grandma will think this movie is just delightful.

To hear why this film means so much to Rita Wilson, be sure to check out my IGTV!
