All the world’s a video game and the men and women merely players. Except for Guy (Ryan Reynolds), who discovers he is actually a background player…a set of coding in an open-world video game. He soon sets off a chain of events and decides to become the hero of his own story – one he rewrites himself. Now, in a world where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way…before it’s too late.
Free Guy is filled with everything we have come to love about Ryan Reynolds, who is also an Executive Producer on the film. It almost feels a Deadpool mashup with The LEGO Movie and a dash of Rozencrantz and Guildenstern Area Dead, filled with cameos from some of the top Hollywood performers. And they are ALL special! My personal favorite is where Guy finally comes face to face with his nemesis and pulls out all the stops with some of the best pop culture icons with a dash of magic. You just have to see it!
The film is rated PG-13 for language and violence including and definitely not a film for my kids, although I know plenty of kids and preteens that would be fascinated with this film. Yes, it’s a film about a video game. It’s also a classic good vs. bad story that begs the age old question: what will you do with the life you have?
Jodie Comer, Joe Keery and Taika Waititi also star in the film with a slew of cameo appearances and voice overs of the créme de la créme Hollywood. ´´´´´´Honorable mentions go to some true gamers some folks might recognize.
