If you haven’t had a chance to watch Diary Of A Future President on Disney+ yet, there is no time like the present to catch up. Episodes 1-7 are currently streaming with 4 additional episodes on the way. Back in January, the girls and I attended the premiere and you can read my initial thoughts here….

The best thing about this show is its consistency. It is so well written, the cast fits together perfectly and provides a smart glimpse into those awkward tween years without dipping too much into campy comedy. And it appeals to family members of all ages. Truly! We are outside the target demographic but my 4-year old asks to watch Diary Of A Future President. Maybe she identifies with a character she still perceives as being a child? Maybe she making mental notes for her own future? I’m just glad that she has some non-princess role models.

In Diary Of A Future President, we see the origin story of a future leader. Told using the narration from the diary of 12-year-old Cuban American Elena (Tess Romero), this new family comedy follows her journey through the ups and downs of middle school, which set her on the path to becoming the president of the United States (her future self is portrayed by Gina Rodriguez). Charlie Bushnell, who makes his acting debut in the series, plays Bobby, Elena’s sweet and mischievous older brother. Selenis Leyva (Orange Is the New Black) stars as Gabi, Elena and Bobby’s sharp and loving mom. Michael Weaver (Here and Now) plays Sam, a lawyer at Gabi’s firm who is in the beginnings of a relationship with her.

Episode 8 “Matters Of Diplomacy” airs Friday, March 6th only on Disney+.

As she prepares for the big dance, Elena is shocked to discover she has a “mustache.” Attempts to fix it only make it worse, forcing her to “own” her look. Bobby and his buddies plan a prank for the dance, but when it doesn’t go the way Bobby expected, he lashes out at Liam. Gabi’s discomfort with her new relationship only grows when her mother invites the entire family over to meet Sam.

It sounds like we’re heading into an episode of body positivity, owning your emotions, managing expectations and familial disputes. These are issues that even adults struggle with! Watch it so you can help support your kid. And each other. It’s like free therapy where everything gets wrapped up nicely at the end of the session with an air of empowerment.

Have you watched Diary Of A Future President yet? Did you have any similar middle school experiences or is it all foreign ground?
